You have the app. You have the routine. You have three years of history, a heat map that goes red in the right places, and a chart of your bench press that looks like a heart monitor on a calm day. And you still stand in front of the rack on a Tuesday, phone in hand, thinking the only question that has ever mattered: what weight do I put on this thing today, and is it more than last time?

The reasonable assumption is that a workout tracker answers that. It does not. Almost every app in this category is a beautifully engineered logbook. It remembers, it charts, it syncs, it shows you your previous set in grey text above the empty box. Then it waits. The decision - which exercise, how many sets, how many reps, at what load, and on which day the load goes up - is still yours, made in a noisy gym on four hours of thinking.

The truth is stranger than the marketing. The apps in this category are not really competing on tracking. Tracking has been a solved problem for a decade. They are competing on how much of the decision they take off you, and most of them have quietly decided to take almost none of it.

What we have tried to do instead is make the piece checkable. Every claim about Fitbod, Strong, Hevy, Jefit and Boostcamp in this article comes from one of three places: the company's own website, its official help centre, or its App Store listing, all read in July 2026. Where we could not verify something, we left it out rather than guessed. We have not invented a limitation, quoted a review, or implied a feature is missing when we only failed to find it. Prices move constantly and are region-specific, so treat every number as "at the time of writing" and check the store before you buy.

Every training claim is tied to a named, peer-reviewed paper with a DOI at the bottom of the page. None of it comes from a competitor's marketing copy, and none of it comes from ours.

And there is one more honesty tax to pay up front. These are genuinely good apps, built by people who care. Strong and Hevy in particular are better at the specific job of logging a set than most of the category, including, in places, us. Each competitor below gets a section on what it does better than Pocket Fit, because a comparison that never concedes anything is an advert with footnotes.

The fast verdict: choose the one that matches your actual problem

If you read nothing else, read this. The right app depends almost entirely on whether you have a programme or need one.

  • Choose Pocket Fit if you do not have a programme, or the one you have has blanks in it. It generates a full week from your goal, days, equipment, injuries and split, prescribes sets, reps and rest from a fixed matrix, schedules it, and moves the weight up on a rule you can read rather than a vibe. Also the pick if you want food tracking and training in one place.
  • Choose Fitbod if you want workouts generated fresh each session around muscle recovery, you train with variable equipment, and you are comfortable paying a premium subscription for it. It is the closest competitor to us in intent and the strongest generation product besides ours.
  • Choose Strong if you already know exactly what you are doing, you want the fastest, quietest logging experience in the category, and you resent every pixel that is not a set. Three custom routines free, and a one-off lifetime option exists.
  • Choose Hevy if you want a superb free tier, a genuinely useful social feed, and the best price-to-feature ratio in the category. If your problem is motivation rather than programming, Hevy is probably the better purchase than anything we sell.
  • Choose Jefit if you want a very large exercise database, detailed per-exercise data, and a big community library of plans to browse.
  • Choose Boostcamp if you want to run a named, published programme from a real coach, for free. If you have already decided to run a specific strength programme, Boostcamp is the correct answer and no generator will beat it.

The uncomfortable summary: four of those six answers are "pick the tool that fits the decision you have already made". Only two of them make the decision.

Two things jump out of that table. First, the logging columns are nearly identical, because logging is commoditised. Second, the programme generation column is where the category actually splits, and it splits three ways: apps that generate nothing, apps that generate a session, and apps that generate a programme.

Program generation and logging are different products wearing the same jacket

A workout log app answers "what did I do?". A programme engine answers "what should I do?". These sound adjacent. They are not. They have different failure modes and different customers.

The log is a memory prosthesis. Its whole job is to be faster than a notebook and never lose your data. Strong and Hevy are close to perfect at this, and if that is your problem you are a few pounds and ten minutes away from solving it forever.

The programme engine is a decision prosthesis. Its job is to convert a small number of facts about you - your goal, your available days, your equipment, your experience, your bad shoulder - into a specific instruction for a specific Tuesday. That is a much harder problem, and it has a much worse failure mode, because a wrong instruction is more damaging than a missing one.

Here is the thing the category rarely says out loud. If you do not have a programme, a log will not give you one, and it will not tell you that you are missing one. It will happily record two years of the same four exercises at the same weight and draw you a flat line. It has done its job perfectly. You have not made any progress.

What "adaptive" actually means, and what it usually means

"Adaptive" is the most abused word in fitness software. It is worth pinning down, because at least four of the six apps here use language of that kind and they mean at least three different things.

Adaptive session selection. The app looks at what you trained recently and picks muscles or exercises for today accordingly. Fitbod is explicit about this on its own site: it says it uses your training history and recovery to recommend the right muscles for each session. That is a real, useful form of adaptation, and it is why Fitbod is the app people reach for when they walk into an unfamiliar gym with no plan.

Adaptive load. The app changes the number on the bar based on what you lifted. This is where most apps get vague, ours included in its marketing, which is why the section below spells out our exact rule.

Adaptive programming. The whole week's structure changes: a missed Wednesday reshuffles the rest of the week rather than vanishing. Very few consumer apps do this at all.

Jefit describes an AI adaptive plan that analyses your strength and fatigue to build your next week, which is the closest thing to the third category among the trackers. Boostcamp takes the honest opposite route: it does not adapt much, because a published programme by a named coach is not supposed to be quietly rewritten by software.

The question to ask any app claiming adaptation is simply: can you tell me the rule? If the answer is a paragraph about proprietary algorithms, you are being asked to trust a black box with your training year.

Why progressive overload should be deterministic, not vibes

Progressive overload is the only mechanism by which any of this works, and the literature is not subtle about the dose-response. Schoenfeld, Ogborn and Krieger pooled 15 studies and 34 treatment groups for the Journal of Sports Sciences and found a graded relationship between weekly set volume and muscle growth: each additional weekly set was associated with an effect size increase of 0.023, roughly a 0.37% larger gain, with higher-volume groups beating lower-volume ones by about 3.9%.

That number is small per set and large per year. It also means the interesting variable is not whether you trained, it is whether the dose went up. A log records the dose. It does not raise it.

The counter-intuitive part is that raising it well is mostly a bookkeeping problem, not a coaching one. Deciding whether today is the day to add 2.5 kg to the incline press does not require insight. It requires a rule applied consistently on a day when you are tired and would rather not.

Pocket Fit's rule is written down and is the same for everyone:

  • Reps go up first, within the prescribed range, and are capped at 15. You earn the rep before you earn the plate.
  • Weight only moves off a confirmed plateau, meaning two matching sessions at the top of the range, not one good day.
  • Increments are fixed: barbell movements go up 5 kg for men and 2.5 kg for women; every other implement goes up 2.5 kg and 1.25 kg respectively.

That is a rules engine, not a black box. You can predict what it will do next Tuesday, which means you can disagree with it. We think that is a feature rather than a limitation, and it is the sharpest single difference between us and every "the AI adjusts it somehow" claim in the category. The reps-first logic has its own long-form treatment in reps first, then weight.

Sets, reps and rest are a matrix, not a mood

Most trackers let you type any number into any box, which is correct for a log and useless as guidance. Pocket Fit derives sets, reps and rest from a fixed matrix keyed on your goal, your experience, and the role the exercise plays in the session. These are the actual numbers the app applies.

Those rest numbers are not aesthetic. Grgic and colleagues reviewed 23 studies with 491 participants for Sports Medicine and concluded that trained lifters need rest intervals longer than 2 minutes to maximise strength gains, while untrained lifters do well on 60 to 120 seconds. That is precisely why the strength column sits at 180 seconds on primary compounds and the fat-loss column sits at 90. An app that leaves the rest timer at a single global default is quietly costing experienced lifters strength.

The load ranges have a similar basis. Schoenfeld, Grgic, Ogborn and Krieger compared training above and below 60% of one-rep max across a meta-analysis in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research and found 1RM strength gains significantly favoured heavy loads, while hypertrophy was similar across load ranges. Hence a 3 to 6 rep primary compound when your goal is strength and an 8 to 12 when it is size, rather than one rep range for everything.

Frequency: the setting almost nobody changes and almost everybody should

Ask a lifter how many days a week they train and you will get an answer. Ask them how many times a week each muscle gets trained and you often will not.

Schoenfeld, Ogborn and Krieger's frequency meta-analysis in Sports Medicine pooled 10 studies and found that when weekly volume was matched, training a muscle group twice a week beat once a week, with effect sizes of 0.49 against 0.30. The comparison between two and three times a week was left unresolved, which is a caveat worth keeping.

This matters for app choice more than it looks. A logbook will let you build a bro split where chest is trained on Monday and then not again for seven days, and it will never mention that the volume-matched literature prefers splitting it. Pocket Fit will still build you that bro split if you ask, because your adherence beats our preferences, but the split rules exist so that the structure is at least deliberate.

Equipment and injuries are constraints, not preferences

This is the quiet failure point of generated training. An app that hands a barbell back squat to someone training in a hotel room with two dumbbells has not adapted to anything; it has produced a plausible-looking session that will not happen.

Pocket Fit takes equipment as a hard filter across five categories: Bodyweight, Dumbbells, Barbells, Machines and Cables. If Bodyweight is your only equipment the app forces the Bodyweight Push Pull Legs split rather than generating a barbell programme you cannot run. Free-text limitations and injuries go in at the same point and shape which movement families are eligible.

The mechanism underneath is worth explaining, because it is the part most "AI workout app" claims skip. Your inputs become an embedding, which retrieves a matching programme-day skeleton from a vector index. Each day of that skeleton is a set of exercise slots with roles - primary compound, accessory compound, isolation - and not a list of fixed exercise names. The exercise database is then pre-filtered by difficulty-based frequency, by the equipment you actually have, and by target area, and only then does a model pick the best exercise for each slot and write the one-sentence reason you can read in the app.

That ordering matters. Filter first, then choose. The reverse order is how you end up being offered a cable fly in a garage gym.

Anti-repetition: the boring rules that make a week look designed

Generation without constraints produces sessions that are technically valid and obviously wrong: three rowing variations in one workout, a deadlift on Monday and a Romanian deadlift on Tuesday, six weeks of identical exercise selection. Pocket Fit enforces a set of rules that exist purely to stop that.

  • No duplicate movement families within a single workout.
  • Only one deadlift variation and one row variation per session.
  • Dumbbell and barbell pressing kept in balance rather than stacked.
  • Variety enforced across the week, not only within a day.
  • Four progressive fallback tiers, so that when a slot filter returns nothing the app relaxes constraints in a defined order instead of failing or returning something absurd.

The seven splits, and the day rules that keep them honest

Most apps either give you no split concept at all or let you pick any split with any number of days, which produces incoherent weeks. Pocket Fit offers seven splits, and several have hard day constraints because they only make sense at certain frequencies.

Push Pull Legs at four days is not Push Pull Legs, it is a rotating mess, so the app does not offer it. That restriction annoys some people. It is still correct. If the split is new to you, Push Pull Legs for beginners covers a full week.

Scheduling is the feature that decides whether the week survives

Here is a thing that sounds like admin and is actually the whole game. A programme that is not on a calendar is a document. A programme on a calendar is a plan with a reminder attached.

Pocket Fit schedules your programme by default, starting from tomorrow, so that reminders work without a second decision from you. When you miss a session, the scheduler reshuffles it into the rest of the week rather than dropping it, which is the difference between a bad Wednesday and a lost week.

Most trackers in this comparison support workout scheduling in some form, and Strong lists it explicitly among its features, but the reshuffle-on-miss behaviour is rare. It is also the behaviour that matters, because nobody misses a session on purpose and everybody misses one eventually. The cost of app friction during a live session

Between sets you have roughly 60 to 180 seconds and about a third of your usual attention. Every tap in that window competes with the set you are about to do.

This is where the pure loggers earn their reputation, and we should say so plainly. Strong describes itself as "the simplest, most intuitive workout tracking experience", and it is not overclaiming. Hevy is similarly quick. If your programme is settled and your only in-gym job is data entry, a dedicated logger will feel better than any generator, including ours, because it is optimised for exactly one interaction repeated forty times.

Pocket Fit's answer is to remove the decision rather than the taps. The target sets, reps and weight for today are already on the screen when you open the session, because the programme decided them in advance. You are confirming, not choosing. There is also a session duration estimate computed from your actual prescription - reps multiplied by 2.5 seconds, plus intra-exercise rest, plus 60 seconds between exercises, multiplied by a 1.7 real-world factor - so you know before you leave the house whether tonight's session fits the gap you have. Per-set calorie estimates come from the same model.

Fitbod: the closest thing to a rival, and where it stops

What it is genuinely great at. Fitbod is the most established generation product in the consumer strength market, and it is very good at the specific thing it does: producing a sensible session, right now, around the equipment in front of you and the muscles you have not hammered recently. Its own site describes a science-backed proprietary algorithm applying progressive overload and muscle recovery, and recommending the right muscles for each session. Its App Store listing shows a 4.8 rating from around 278,000 ratings, watchOS support, and both iOS and Android availability. That is a mature product with a large, satisfied user base.

Who should pick it. Lifters who train at varying gyms, travel often, or genuinely do not want a fixed weekly structure. If your training life is improvisational by necessity, session-level generation beats programme-level generation.

Where it stops. Fitbod is session-centric by design. It is excellent at "what should I do today" and less oriented around "what is my week, and what happens to it when Wednesday collapses". The generation logic is described as proprietary, so the progression rule is not something you can read and argue with. And it is the most expensive option in this comparison at the time of writing: the App Store listing shows a monthly plan at $15.99 and a year of Fitbod Elite at $95.99, with cheaper legacy tiers still visible. Its help centre describes 3 free workouts before a subscription is required.

How Pocket Fit differs. We generate a scheduled multi-week programme rather than a session, we publish the progression rule instead of describing it, we take free-text injuries and limitations as inputs, and we include nutrition. The honest version: Fitbod is the better pick if you want a fresh workout each time you open the app. We are the better pick if you want a programme that persists, argues with your calendar, and can be read.

Strong: the best pure logbook in the category

What it is genuinely great at. Speed and restraint. Strong has been doing one thing since long before most of this category existed, and its official feature list is a list of things lifters actually use: supersets, custom exercises, CSV export, Apple Health integration, a warm-up calculator, Siri Shortcuts, RPE, advanced charts, body measurements, workout scheduling, a muscle heat map and custom timers. Its App Store listing shows a 4.9 rating from around 108,000 ratings and a fully-featured Apple Watch app that logs with or without the phone.

Who should pick it. Anyone with a programme they trust and no interest in being coached. Powerlifters running a known block. People coming off a coach's spreadsheet. Anyone who wants CSV export because they do their own analysis.

What it does better than us. The logging interaction itself, and the export story. If you want your data in a spreadsheet on Sunday afternoon, Strong is built for you in a way we are not.

Where it stops. It does not generate programmes and does not claim to. That is a design decision, not an oversight. The free tier allows unlimited workouts but is limited to 3 custom routines, and Strong PRO appears on the App Store listing at around $4.99 monthly, $19.99 for six months, $23.99 to $29.99 yearly, and a lifetime option at $79.99 to $99.99.

How Pocket Fit differs. We are on the other side of the line. Strong assumes the decision is made. We assume it is not.

Hevy: the best free tier, and the social one that works

What it is genuinely great at. Hevy has the strongest free offer in the paid-app part of this category and a social feed that people actually use rather than tolerate. Officially it describes itself as a free workout tracker for iOS and Android, with routine planning, warmup, drop and failure set marking, automatic rest timers, advanced charts, personal records, 1RM calculations, exercise videos, and a follow, like and comment feed where you can save other athletes' routines. It supports Apple Watch and Wear OS with offline tracking, plus a web app for planning. Its App Store listing shows a 4.9 rating from around 82,000 ratings, and the company states over 15 million athletes.

Who should pick it. If your problem is showing up rather than knowing what to do, Hevy is very likely the better purchase than anything we sell, and we would rather say that than pretend otherwise. Social accountability is a real mechanism and Hevy has built the best consumer version of it in lifting.

What it does better than us. The free tier, the price, and the feed. Hevy's help centre states the free version allows up to 4 routines and 7 custom exercises, with Pro removing those limits, and its App Store listing shows Pro at around $3.99 monthly, $23.99 yearly and $74.99 lifetime. That is remarkable value.

Where it stops. Hevy does not build you a programme. You bring the routine or you save someone else's, which means the quality of your training becomes the quality of whichever stranger's routine you copied. There is no goal-driven prescription of sets, reps and rest, and no deterministic progression rule.

Jefit: the database and the community library

What it is genuinely great at. Depth of data. Jefit officially cites a database of over 1,400 exercises, thousands of expert-designed plans, and over 12 million members. It also describes an AI-powered Adaptive Plan that analyses your strength and fatigue to build your next week, along with muscle recovery breakdowns, 1RM calculations and weightlifting charts. Its App Store listing shows a 4.8 rating from around 47,000 ratings and watchOS support.

Who should pick it. People who like data density and want to browse a very large library of plans and exercises rather than be handed one. If you enjoy the research phase of training, Jefit rewards it.

What it does better than us. Sheer exercise catalogue size, and the breadth of the community plan library.

Where it stops. Breadth is a real cost as well as a benefit. A library of thousands of plans still leaves you making the choice, and the interface carries more density than a mid-set glance comfortably supports. At the time of writing the App Store listing shows Elite at around $12.99 monthly and $69.99 yearly, with discounted and legacy tiers also listed.

How Pocket Fit differs. We do not ask you to choose a plan from a library. You give six or seven facts and receive one programme, with a written reason attached to each exercise.

Boostcamp: the honest case for not using a generator at all

What it is genuinely great at. Boostcamp is the most generous free product in this comparison, and it is not close. Its site states 11,000-plus programmes, including 130-plus coach-designed routines, with named coaches including Dr Eric Helms, Geoffrey Schofield and Cody Lefever, and it states the full library is available at no cost along with tracking and progressive overload features. It also offers an AI-assisted programme builder and reports over 1.2 million users and more than 120 million workouts logged.

Who should pick it. Anybody who has already decided to run a specific published programme. If the answer to "what should I train" is "week 3 of the programme I chose", a generator is not merely unnecessary, it is interference. Boostcamp is the correct tool and it costs nothing.

What it does better than us. Access to real, published, coach-authored programmes with track records, for free. We generate a programme for you; we do not hand you a famous one.

Where it stops. Boostcamp is a delivery system for programmes that already exist. It does not personalise around your injuries, your equipment gaps, or your changing schedule the way a generator does, because that is not the promise. Boostcamp Pro adds exclusive coach programmes, advanced analytics and premium tools; public reporting on the exact price varies, so check the current listing rather than trusting a number in a blog post.

How Pocket Fit differs. A published programme is a fixed artefact designed for a population. Ours is generated for your inputs and rewritten week to week from what you log. Neither is universally better. If you are a beginner without a specific goal, the generated one is usually easier to stick to. If you are chasing a specific strength total, the published one has the stronger pedigree.

What actually happens when you press generate in Pocket Fit

Concretely, in order.

Import your own programme instead of starting over

The most common objection to any generator is the correct one: I already have a programme, from a coach, a PDF, a screenshot, or the notes app. Switching apps should not mean abandoning it.

Pocket Fit imports it. You give the name, the workouts, the ordered exercises, and optionally sets, reps and weight. Anything you leave blank is filled in from the same matrices the generator uses, and any weight you omit is pre-loaded from the highest weight you have historically lifted on that exact exercise in that rep range. That is the feature we would point a Strong or Hevy user at first, because it means the migration cost is close to zero and your existing plan keeps its identity. It has its own post: bring your own workout.

Female-specific selection rules, because "personalised" should mean something

Personalisation that stops at bodyweight and units is not personalisation. Pocket Fit applies a set of explicit selection rules for female users:

  • Lower body prioritises glute work.
  • Barbell hip thrust and Romanian deadlift are preferred as primary lower-body movements.
  • Barbell and Smith machine bench patterns are excluded.
  • Dumbbell or machine flies are chosen over cable crossovers.
  • Rope pushdowns are chosen over overhead cable extensions.
  • Dumbbell curls are chosen over machine curls.
  • One squat variation and one bridge variation per workout, no stacking.

You can disagree with any of these. They are preferences encoded as rules, and preferences are arguable. But they are visible, which is more than "the algorithm personalises for you" gives you.

Nutrition, coaching and the parts that live outside the session

Three more things sit alongside the programme engine, each with its own deeper write-up.

Fuel is the nutrition side: scan a plate or a barcode, check protein, carbs and fat, no red numbers and no shame. It matters here because protein availability is what lets the progression rule keep working, a point we made at length in progressive overload runs on protein. None of Strong, Hevy or Fitbod includes food logging.

The AI coach rebuilds or adjusts a session from a sentence. The squat rack is taken, your shoulder is unhappy, you have 30 minutes instead of 60. That is a chat interface over the same rules engine, not a separate opinion.

The long game. A progressive 12-month character avatar, friends, groups and leaderboards, and week-based streaks with grace weeks, so a missed week does not reset a year. Sleep gets its own input too, because it decides when the weight should go up more often than people expect, which we covered in sleep and progressive overload.

What Pocket Fit does worse than these apps

An honest comparison needs this section, so here it is.

  • Raw logging speed. Strong and Hevy have spent years shaving milliseconds off the set-entry interaction. We are fast, but we are not the benchmark.
  • Data export. Strong's CSV export is better than ours.
  • Social depth. Hevy's feed and following model is more developed than our friends, groups and leaderboards.
  • Exercise catalogue size. Jefit's 1,400-plus exercise database is larger than what we surface.
  • A free library of published programmes. Boostcamp's free 11,000-plus programme library has no equivalent in our app, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
  • Track record. Fitbod and Jefit have been in market far longer, with hundreds of thousands of ratings between them. We are newer.

If two or more of those bullets describe your actual problem, buy one of theirs. We would rather you train than switch.

Where the evidence is thin

The training science quoted above is the best available, which is not the same as strong.

The frequency meta-analysis pooled only 10 studies, and the authors explicitly said the comparison between twice and three times weekly needed further work. The volume dose-response drew on 15 studies of mostly short duration, largely in young, mostly male participants, and an effect size of 0.023 per set is a small number carrying a lot of interpretive weight. The rest-interval review graded its included studies as good to moderate quality, not high. Load comparisons hinge on sets being taken close to failure, which is hard to standardise between a laboratory and a Tuesday evening.

More importantly, none of this literature tests apps. There is no randomised trial comparing Pocket Fit's generation against Fitbod's, or against a well-run Boostcamp programme, and any claim that one produces more muscle than another is unsupported by anything except the confidence of whoever is saying it. What the literature supports is that volume, frequency, load and rest matter, and that a system which sets them deliberately has a better prior than one that leaves them blank. That is the argument. It is narrower than most marketing in this category, and we would rather make the narrow one.

Autoregulation deserves a specific caveat, because it underpins every "adaptive" claim here. Greig and colleagues reviewed autoregulation in resistance training for Sports Medicine and found the field so inconsistent in its definitions and terminology that practical implementation remains ambiguous. When five apps all say they adapt, part of the confusion is inherited from the science itself.

And here is the fairest point against our whole thesis. Michie and colleagues' meta-regression in Health Psychology found clear support for self-monitoring of behaviour as an effective technique in physical activity interventions. Logging, on its own, does something real. The digital notebooks are not doing nothing. Our claim is that the notebook is necessary and not sufficient, not that it is useless.

Notice that the two apps built primarily around programme generation are the two most expensive. That is not a coincidence and it is not a scam. Generating is more expensive to run than storing.

How to choose in five minutes

If you want a decision procedure rather than a table, use this.

  • Can you say what you are training on Tuesday, and at what weight? If yes, you need a logger. Go to Strong or Hevy, pay under $30 a year, and stop reading comparisons.
  • Can you say it, but only because you copied it from somewhere and never adjusted it? You need progression, not storage. Import it into Pocket Fit and let the blanks fill themselves.
  • Do you have a programme in mind by name? Boostcamp, free.
  • Do you train wherever you happen to be? Fitbod.
  • Do you not have a programme at all? Pocket Fit or Fitbod, and the tiebreaker is whether you want a week or a workout.
  • Do you also want food handled? Pocket Fit, or a logger plus a separate nutrition app.

Put it together: a programme engine with logging attached

The category has spent a decade perfecting the record and almost no time on the decision. That is why five excellent apps can leave the same lifter standing in front of the same rack with the same question.

There is no single answer, because these apps solve two different problems. If you need a programme, Pocket Fit or Fitbod. If you already have one and want the fastest log, Strong or Hevy. If you want a named published programme for free, Boostcamp. If you want the deepest exercise database, Jefit. The question that actually decides it is whether you know what you are training on Tuesday.

What is the best free workout tracking app?

Boostcamp has the most generous free offer in this comparison, since its site states the full library of 11,000-plus programmes plus tracking is available at no cost. Hevy is the strongest free logger, with 4 routines and 7 custom exercises on the free plan according to its help centre. Pocket Fit lets you generate a programme and train without a card. Strong's free tier gives unlimited workouts with a 3 custom routine limit.

Is Fitbod worth it?

If you train at varying gyms and want a fresh, sensible session generated each time you open the app, yes. It is the most expensive option here at the time of writing, with the App Store listing showing $15.99 monthly or $95.99 yearly and its help centre describing 3 free workouts before subscribing. It is worth less to you if you want a persistent weekly programme, a progression rule you can read, or nutrition tracking in the same place.

Do I need a workout app if I already have a programme?

Not for programming, no. You need a log, and Strong or Hevy will do that superbly for a few pounds a year. What an app adds beyond the log is filling the blanks: Pocket Fit's import takes your existing programme and completes any missing sets, reps or weights from its matrices, pre-loading weights from the heaviest you have historically lifted on that exercise in that rep range.

Which workout app is best for beginners?

For a complete beginner the deciding factor is not features, it is whether the app removes the decision. Pocket Fit generates the full week, prescribes 4 sets of 6 to 10 reps on primary compounds with 120 seconds rest if your goal is muscle, and schedules it so you get reminded. Boostcamp is an excellent free alternative if you are willing to pick a beginner programme yourself. What is the best app for progressive overload?

Look for a published rule rather than a claim. Pocket Fit raises reps first within the prescribed range up to a cap of 15, then adds weight only after a confirmed plateau of two matching sessions, in fixed increments of 5 kg or 2.5 kg on barbells and 2.5 kg or 1.25 kg on everything else. That matters because the volume literature shows a graded dose-response of roughly 0.37% extra gain per additional weekly set, and you only collect that if the dose actually rises.

Hevy vs Strong: which one should I pick?

They are close. Hevy has the better free tier, the lower price, a social feed, Wear OS support and a web app. Strong has CSV export, Siri Shortcuts, a warm-up calculator, a muscle heat map and a very refined watch app. If you want community and value, Hevy. If you want a quiet, exportable, private logbook, Strong. Neither will build you a programme.

Can I import my own program into a workout app?

Yes, in Pocket Fit. Give the programme a name, add the workouts and ordered exercises, and optionally sets, reps and weights. Anything omitted is filled from the goal-and-experience matrices, omitted weights are pre-loaded from your own history on that exercise, the whole import is one atomic transaction, and it is scheduled from tomorrow.

Is an AI workout app better than a coach?

No, and nothing in this article claims it is. A coach watches you move, which no app in this comparison does. What software is genuinely better at is consistency: applying the same progression rule every week, remembering what you lifted on 14 March, and rescheduling a missed session without a conversation. That is a bookkeeping advantage, not a coaching one.
